Market Weighton was mentioned in Domesday as Wicstun and belonged to the king. The affix market didn't appear until the 19th century and its name seems to derive from 'farmstead and an earlier Romano-British settlement'. It is a small town at the foot of the Wolds about nine miles west of Beverley.
Today the town has a good range of shops including a Tescos and inns and restaurants. One of the oldest flat races in England is held nearby each year known as the Kipling Cotes Derby.
