Boroughbridge is an old town on the River Ure well known for its standing stones observed by the antiquarian John Leyland in the 17th century. It lies on the Great North Road (A1) about 15 miles northwest of York. In the 14th century the town was raided by the Scots and shorty after Edward II defeated the Earl of Leicester and the rebel barons finally reducing their power over the king.
