Bingley was mentioned in Domesday as Bingelei and it is thought the name derives from 'Brynna's people's clearing'. During the Middle Ages it was an important market town with an ancient market cross and developed as a woollen centre and then aided by its situation on the Leeds-Liverpool canal. There are many interesting houses to see nearby including Marley Hall, St Ives, Gawthorpe Hall and the Georgian Myrtle Grove which is now the Town Hall.
