Bawtry developed as a town in the 13th century taking advantage of its position on the River Idle and exporting wool to the continent. It then declined with John LeLand commenting in the the 16th century that it was ' very bare and pore'. William Bradford was a local man who led the Pilgrims to America in the Mayflower. The town has several 17th century and 18th century houses.
