Barnsley was known as Berneslai in Domesday and lies on the River Deane about 12 miles north of Sheffield and received its first charter in the 13th century and soon had three fairs. The town was an important coaching station in the 18th century and developed into an industrial town with industries based on glass making and coal mining.
