Find retirement developments in some of the finest towns and villages in Chester-le-Street
Chester-le-Street is an old settlement and dates back to Roman times when the fort at Concangis was occupied between the 1st and 4th centuries. Due to its position on the River Wear the town had good access to raw materials and its good communications with the Great North Road passing through led to some prosperity in the middle ages. The body of St Cuthbert was laid to rest here for over a hundred years before being finally taken to Durham. Lumley Castle about one mile north-east is an annexe to Durham University and and the 200 acres Lambton Lion Park can be seen nearby.
