Find retirement developments in some of the finest towns and villages in Bishop Auckland
Bishop Auckland lies about 11 miles south of Durham and came into existance to serve the needs of the Bishop of Durham's palace. The palace was originally a manor house which was substantially developed in the 13th century and further renovated in the 18th century with an impressive gatehouse. The Bishops Park is about 800 acres and the townspeople still have access. The private palace grounds are screened by stone arches designed by James Wyatt. St Andrew's Parish Church contains a 9th century Anglo-Saxon cross and is the largest parish church in the county.
