Yateley is situated about three miles north-west of Camberley with Yateley Common on its southern boundary. Its name is thought to derive from 'Yate' meaning a 'gate' and 'Lea' which was a forest clearing. It is a largely residential town and Camberley nearby provides more comprehensive services.
