Milford-on-Sea : Milford-on-Sea lies to the east of Christchurch Bay and has an extensive but mostly shingle beach. Originally a Saxon settlement the village was an important centre for salt production in the Middle Ages and then became a well known resort in the late 19th century. There are many excellent walks in the area and Keyhaven about a mile to the east has a bird sanctuary. Hurst Castle was built by Henry VIII as part of his coastal defences and sits at the end of almost two miles of shingle.
