Hampshire was the heart of Saxon Wessex and is predominately farming country with beautiful rolling countryside.  The north-east of the county is almost stepping back into a bygone age with quiet lanes in gorgeous valleys leading to ancient villages.  To the south are undulating chalk downs with famous rivers such as the Test and to the south east the New Forest National Park.  Its many market towns have beautiful high streets often retaining their Medieval street patterns and the ancient capital of Wessex is no exception.

Winchester, a 'city of Kings and priests' with the magnificent Cathedral and College at its centre, is rich in history and with the natural beauty of the river and the Hampshire Downs offers a lively culture and a convenient location. There is an enticing mix of independent retailers and High Street names and unusual boutiques and galleries. A wide choice of excellent restaurants is available with The Hotel du Vin, The Old Vine, Brasserie Blanc and Loch Fyne amongst others. Theatres include the Theatre Royal, the Tower Arts Centre, the Chesil Theatre in the former St Peters Church and the Stripe Theatre in the University Campus. The Discovery Centre, home to Winchester's library, has its own gallery and cafe and Winchester has a popular Film Society with a cinema in Southgate Street.
