Fordingbridge : Fordingbridge was mentioned in Domesday as Forde and had a church and two mills. It is in area long settled and nearby in the village of Rockbourne is a Roman Villa. The town is situated near the edge of the New Forest on the borders of Wiltshire and Dorset. An old bridge spans the River Avon and its name derives from 'bridge of the people living by the ford'. The Fordingbridge Museum is situated in Kings Yard in the centre of the town and there is also a memorial to Augustus John who died here in 1961.
