Eastleigh was mentioned in Domesday as Estleie and lies about four miles northeast of Southampton. Its name probably derives from 'east wood or clearing'. The original village came into being to house workers on the new railway in the mid 19th century and then really came to prominence in the early 20th century as a railway town. The town grew further and it is now a major residential and commercial centre with the new Swan Shopping Centre built in the heart of the town. Southampton Airport is to the south of the town.
