Southampton has a long history dating back to Roman times and even today parts of the ancient walls are still visible. Saxon ‘Hamwic‘ was an important town before the Normans came but at the time of Domesday there were more Frenchmen in the town than Englishmen and during the middle ages the city went on to develop a rich trade with France importing wine.
