Barton on Sea today is really a suburb of New Milton but it is an old village mentioned in Domesday as Barton. Its thought the name derives from Beorma's Farm. In the 18th and 19th centuries the village was famed for its smuggling activities causing Coast Guard Cottages to built to house law enforcers.
