Harleston is an old market town in the beautiful Waveney Valley on the old coaching route from London to Great Yarmouth. There is a range of shops from supermarkets to chemist, bakers and butchers and many fine old buildings. The larger centre of Diss is about six miles away on the River Waveney. Its thought its name might come from place of 'ditch or dyke' and the town was built around the edge of a six acre lake. There are many attractive buildings including Georgian, Tudor and Victorian houses. Thelveton Hall dates from the 16th century and lies about four miles northeast of the town.
