Aylsham is an ancient market town mentioned in Domesday as Aelsaham and belonged to the King with two mills. It is set on the River Bure and there is archaeological evidence showing occupation since prehistoric times with substantial Roman remains also in the area. The tower of the parish church of St Michael and All Angels dominates the market place and surrounding area with its shops and weekly markets. The town is an important agricultural centre and the Aylsham Show on August Bank Holiday Monday at nearby Blickling Park.
