Widnes is across the Mersey from Runcorn and was for many years part of Lancashire. It developed as a town in the 19th century with the building of the first chemical factory. When the industry expanded the town absorbed the nearby villages and in the early 20th century had a poor reputation due to the excessive smoke pollution.
