Sale was historically part of Cheshire and lies on the south bank od the River Mersey about six miles west of Manchester. A small market town for much of the middle ages it expanded considerably in the 18th century with the opening of the Basingstoke Canal allowing increased trade. The town developed further in the 19th century with the coming of the railways. Today Sale is a popular commuter town with good shopping and leisure facilities.
