Helsby was mentioned in Domesday as Helesbe and was settled by the Vikings in the 10th century. The village sits off the main Chester to Warrington Road at the foot of Helsby Hill which is part managed by the National Trust. Helsby Hill itself is the site of a hillfort thought to have been reoccupied by the Saxons in the 10th century.
