Congleton was mentioned as Cogeltone in Domesday and lies on the River Dane to the west of the Macclesfield Canal about 11 miles north-east of Crewe. Its name probably derives from 'farmstead at the round-topped hill'. The town has a long history and the borough charter dates from the 13th century. The 18th century St Peter's church has a fine Georgian interior and Little Moreton Hall about four miles to the south-west is a 15th century moated manor house.
