Carmarthen is probably one of the oldest towns in Wales and was occupied by the Romans in the first century AD. Its name probably derives from 'fort at the fort by the sea' and it is situated on the River Towy about 14 miles north-west of Llanelli. The Normans later built a castle the ruins of which can still be seen. Carmarthen has long been associated with the story of Merlin, King Arthur's wizard, who is thought to have been born here.
