Surrey has long been protected by the Green Belt, the National Trust and its Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and large parts remain farming country. There are many beautiful villages and towns such as Dorking, Farnham, Godalming and Reigate have their particular charm. The county is well-known for its racecourses and golf courses as well as many fine gardens that open to the public including Wisley.
Guilford was the only town in Surrey in the 11th century and remains the county town and the largest in the county. Kings and Queens occupied the castle until the 14th century and Richmond Palace at Richmond upon Thames was a favourite of Tudor monarchs whilst Kingston has an older royal claim as the coronation place of several Anglo-Saxon kings.
