Surbiton once known as 'Kingston-on-Railway', is a little over a mile and a half south of Kingston-upon-Thames and came into being with the coming of the railways and the professional classes. The architecture of the town reflects this and today it remains very much a commuter town with journey times by train to Central London taking less than 20 minutes. Its name means 'southern grange or outlying farm'.
