Leatherhead : Leatherhead is mentioned in Domesday as Leret and seems to have derived its name from 'grey ford'. The town grew up at a crossing of the River Mole and today there is more than one bridge with the main A24 now by-passing the town to the east. For many years the principal route over the the North Downs to the coast there remain several good inns and restaurants. There are good shops and the Thorndike theatre was opened in 1969. Nearby is Banks Common and Bookham Common with excellent walks.
