This part of the Sussex coast has long been settled by ancient Britions and Saxons and in 1066 William the Conqueror gave the Rape of Hastings to the Count of Eu. Bexhill-on-Sea is a town and resort about five miles west of Hastings and for much of its history remained a small village. Richard Sackville, seventh Earl De La Warr, decided to create a fashionable seaside town and the De La Warr Pavilion, designed by Erich Mendelsohn and Chermayeff, was built on the seafront. It is one of the most notable Art Deco buildings of the 1930's.

The town has long attracted visitors and the retired with holiday amenities and long stretches of parade walks and a crescent shaped bay. Bexhill and St Leonards were both built to cater for the demand for healthy lifestyles in the early 19th century and the breezy winds along the cliff tops are still there. There are many places of interest nearby including the moated brick built Hertmonceaux Castle and Gardens, the sprawling Pevensey Castle, once a Roman fort, St Clements Caves at Hastings and of course Battle Abbey. The refurbished De La Warr Pavilion is a Grade I listed building and centre for contemporary arts, architecture and live performances.
