Royal Court was originally the Royal Hotel built in the early 19th century at the height of the resort's popularity. It is situated off Den Terrace to the south of the town centre and within walking distance of shops. Both Churchill and Eisenhower stayed at the hotel during World War II. The development consists of 36 flats and was renovated in 1999.

Teignmouth became a port in the 13th century and became involved with the Newfoundland fisheries which was an important source of employment for the town. Privateering was also important to the local economy. By the early 19th century Teignmouth was known as a fashionable resort.
