Newton Abbot lies at the head of the Teign estuary about 13 miles south-west of Exeter and probably derives its name from 'new farmstead, estate or village'. For much of the Middle Ages it remained a market town and was an important agricultural centre. Known as Newton Bushel in the 17th century it was twice visited by kings, Charles I in 1625 and later William of Orange in 1688. With the coming of the railways in the 19th century the town expanded considerably and today it remains an important railway junction. Newton Abbot racecourse is the most westerly in England.

The area around Newton Abbot has long been settled and the remains of a Norman motte and bailey castle can be seen on Highweek Hill to the west of the town. The New Town of the Abbots of Torre Abbey was given the right to hold a market in the 13th century. The twin markets of Newton Abbot and Newton Bushel were eventually merged in the 17th century and Speed only seems to record Newton Bushel.

The town later developed a flourishing trade with Newfoundland and many street names recall the fishing industry and related place names such as Ropewalk, Newfoundland Way and St Johns Street - named after Humphrey Gilbets landfall in Newfoundland. Just north of the town lie the ball clay workings of Bovey basin which contributed towards the Wedgewood pottery business
