East Grinstead: East Grinstead lies about seven miles to the north east of Crawley which was just a village in the sixteenth century when East Grinstead was the main town north of Ashdown Forest. Here in this part of The Weald woodland survived almost intact until the eighteenth century. The manufacture of glass became important due to the large deposits of local iron ore and other minerals together with wood and charcoal for fuel and running water.
