Macclesfield has a large entry in Domesday Book and belonged to Edwin, the Saxon Earl of Chester and already had a mill. There are many steep streets and fine 18th century houses testifing to the towns' prosperity in the industrial age. Immediately to the east of the town is the Peak District National Park now encompassing Macclesfield Forest, one od medieval England's great hunting reserves.
