HISTORY

Opposite Allingham Court is the church of St John the Evangelist founded in 1849 when it was felt that Godalming Parish church was too small to accommodate the growing hamlets of Catteshall, Meadrow, Biscombe and Farncombe.

Godalming is a very attractive small town bordered to the north east by the River Wey. In the 19th century it was an important staging post on the way to Portsmouth. Today its tightly packed high street is full of interest with speciality shops and facilities for every day living and several inns. Nearby are many interesting places to visit including Winkworth Arboretum and Loseley House.

The many 16th and 18th century buildings combine to lend character to this attractive old town and the Borough Museum houses the many local antiquities. There are good local shops and the larger centre of Guildford is within easy driving distance.
