Romford: The major regional centre of Romford in Essex was known as Romfort in the twelth century and Rumford in the seventeenth. It probably derived its name from 'wide or spacious' ford where the old Roman Road to Colchester crossed the River Beam. By the nineteenth century Romford was well known for producing high-quality leather breeches. Today it is a major commercial and residential centre with easy access to the M25.
