In the 17th and 18th centuries it is thought the town was home to a smuggling fraternity with tunnels linking St John's Church with various inns and houses in the area. Three Martello towers stand on the coast.

Communications: Clacton-on-Sea is about 12 miles southeast of Colchester and about 13 miles from Harwich. Frinton-on-Sea further along the coast is about six miles and to the east Brightlingsea is about five miles. Fast trains to London (Liverpool Street) take less than an hour and a half.
