St Osyth is surrounded by open countryside and close to the Essex coastline. The village lies about about fives miles to the west of Clacton-on-Sea and eight miles from Colchester. To the west of the village centre is Mill Street which leads to a small harbour and St Osyth beach. The village has a good range of shops and amenities including doctors' surgery, chemist, newsagents, post office, hairdressers, mini-supermarket and inns and restaurants.
Clacton lies just to the east of the Blackwater estuary and remains a family seaside resort. Its heyday was in the 20th century when it was home to a Butlins with its swimming pools, pier, promenade and amusement arcades. In the 17th and 18th centuries it is thought the town was home to a smuggling fraternity with tunnels linking St John's Church with various inns and houses in the area. Three Martello towers stand on the coast.
