Barking was once famous for its fishing industry and the Valence House Museum records the town's fishing heritage. Fishing had declined by the 20th century to be replaced by new industrial businesses as the area's chief employer. These too eventually declined and today the town centre is going through a regeneration project to bring new business to the area and new housing and retail centres are being provided.

Cromwell Lodge is about eight miles from Central London and about six miles southeast of Romford. Rainham to the east is about five miles and Ilford to the north two miles. The M25 at J30 is eight miles and trains to London ( Fenchurch Street) take just over 15 minutes.
