Nottingham was seized by the Danes in the middle of the 9th century and became one of the Five Burghs, along with Derby, Leicester, Lincoln and Stamford. These burghs were fortified towns known as the Danish Borough and were only recovered by the Anglo-Saxons in the mid 10th century though the area remained distinctly separate until well into the 11th century.

Nottingham is about 25 miles north of Leicester and 18 miles northeast of Ashby-de-la-Zouch. Derby is about 12 miles to the west and Melton Mowbray 18 miles to the southeast. The M1 at Junction is about seven miles and fast trains to London (St Pancras) take about an hour and 45 minutes.
