Since Roman times Croydon has been on an a major trunck road to the south coast and its importance developed further when Brighton became a fashionable resort in the 18th century. Croydon's central position and the coming of the railways ensured its rapid growth in the 19th century. Today Croydon is an important shopping centre with a new tramlink. There are well known concert halls and theatres, inns and restaurants and Whitgift's almshouses still stand in the centre of town.

Croydon is about 11 miles from Central London and about the same distance north of Reigate. Sutton is about five miles to the west and Bromley five miles to the northeast. The M25 at Junction 6 is about nine miles and fast trains to London (Victoria) take less than 15 minutes.
