The area around Newton Abbot has long been settled and the remains of a Norman motte and bailey castle can be seen on Highweek Hill to the west of the town. The New Town of the Abbots of Torre Abbey was given the right to hold a market in the 13th century. The twin markets of Newton Abbot and Newton Bushel were eventually merged in the 17th century and Speed only seems to record Newton Bushel.

The town later developed a flourishing trade with Newfoundland and many street names recall the fishing industry and related place names such as Ropewalk, Newfoundland Way and St Johns Street - named after Humphrey Gilbets landfall in Newfoundland. Just north of the town lie the ball clay workings of Bovey basin which contributed towards the Wedgewood pottery business.
