Truro is Cornwall's county town set in a beautiful valley dominated by the new cathedral with its three spires rising at its centre. The town has some fine Georgian buildings with Lemon Street being one of the best preserved Georgian streets in Britain. At its head is the Lander Column, in memory of Richard Lander, who discovered the scource of the Niger in 1835. The Royal Cornwall Museum in River Street has a world famous collection of minerals and is the county's collection of archaeology. The town has numerous good small shops as well as the larger national chains with many places to eat and relax.

Truro is about ten miles from the sea and about 13 miles south west of St Austell. Redruth is about nine miles and Falmouth 12 miles. Rock is 24 miles. Fast trains to London (Paddington) take a little over four hours.
