Highland Park is situated in the Firthside village of Barbaraville on Nigg Bay on the north side of Cromarty Firth and about half an hour from Inverness, the capital of the Highlands. Invergordon is about three miles to the southwest and named after Sir William Gordon who changed the name from Inverbreakie meaning 'speckled river' in the 18th century. During the First World War it was an important naval port.

Inverness is an ancient town once the capital of King Brude who was converted to christianity in the sixth century. It lies at the southern end of the Moray Firth close to Culloden Moor where the last battle on the British mainland was fought. Nearby are famous castles some now better known for their gardens such as Brodie with its beautiful spring daffodils.
