Braintree is an ancient settlement mentioned in Domesday and today it is still a major town having gained considerable importance in the seventeenth century as the chief wool centre of the area. In the nineteenth century it came to further prominence as the home of the Courtaulds silk factory. There are many antique shops, restaurants and bars and less than 100 metres away is the Leisure Centre. The station is about a fifteen minute walk.

Braintree is about ten miles due north of Chelmsford and 20 miles due east of Junction 11 of the M11 and Bishops Stordford. Halstead is seven miles and Colchester 18 miles. Fast trains to London (Liverpool Street) take a little over half an hour. Stansted Airport is 19 miles.
