Every November the town celebrates bonfire night in some style with spectacular torch-lit processions. The Lewes bonfire night is perhaps the most spectacular in East Sussex and is the town's most important annual event. It starts in the early evening and numerous processions wind throught the town at night.

Lewes is the ancient county town of East Sussex and lies on the River Ouse about eight miles inland from Newhaven and Brighton. Uckfield is about eight miles and Haywards Heath eleven miles. The town is bypased by the A27 immediately to the south. Fast trains to London (London Bridge) take about an hour and ten minutes.
