In the Middle Ages Horley was a farming community and with dissolution of the monastries the Manor was acquired by Henry VIII in the 16th century. It later belonged to Christs Hospital in London and at the time consisted of three small hamlets around a large open space. One of the these was centred on St Bartholomews Church and an old timbered inn, the Six Bells. The church has a fine knight's effigy and a 15th century brass.

Horley is about four miles north of Crawley and about five miles south of Redhill. Dorking is about eight miles and East Grinstead eight miles. The M23 at Junction 9 is about two miles and trains to London (London Bridge) take just over half an hour.
