Pontefract is an old medieval town situated on an old Roman Road. The main market days are Wednesdays and Saturdays and there is a Tescos and Morrisons supermarkets and numerous pubs with one dating from the 16th century. Pontefract Priory was dissolved in the 16th century.

Pontefract cakes became well known in the 17th century and later a major source of employment. The deep sandy soils were ideal for growing liquorice in the local fields. Other industries reflected the various trades at the time and are remembered in place names such as Tanners Row, Shoemarket and Cornmarket. The town has several Georgian buildings and a well known racecourse.

Pontefract is situated about two miles south of Castleford and about eight miles west of Wakefield. Barnsley is about 12 miles to the southwest and York about 25 miles to the northeast. The M62 is closeby at Junctions 32 and 33 and the A1(M) at Junction 41 is about a mile. Fast trains to London (Kings Cross) take just over three hours.
