The whole area is now largely built up and the town expanded rapidly with the coming of the railways in the 19th century and Redhill railway station continues to be an important junction today.

The town has most high street names including Sainsburys and WH Smith amongst others and the main shopping precinct is pedestrianised. In the 2nd World War its airfield was an important RAF station linking with Biggin Hill to the north-east. London Gatwick is about seven miles to the south on the A23.

The M25 (Reigate Hill, Junction 8) is within two miles and links with other major motorway networks in the south of the country. Dorking to the west is six miles and Oxted to the east is seven miles. Crawley is nine miles and Gatwick Airport is within seven miles.

Fast trains to London, either Victoria or London Bridge, take about half an hour.
