Street is situated in the Somerset Levels at the end of the Polden Hills and was controlled by Glastonbury Abbey until the Dissolution. Quarries of the local blue lias stone were worked from as early as the 12th century. Stone was transported along a causeway to Glastonbury to help rebuild the Abbey after a fire.

Street is about two miles south of Glastonbury and about ten miles west of Shepton Mallet. Somerton is about five miles to the south and Wells about six miles.
