Today Wantage is a prosperous market town with considerable new development to the north-west. There are many ancient buildings along alleyways linking through to the main square where at the west end stands the magnificent church of St Peter and St Paul with some tombs of the Fitzwaryn family. Wantage was fictionalized as the town in Thomas Hardy's 'Alfredston' and John Betjeman wrote many of his poems here when he lived down a quiet lane off Ham Road not far from the town centre.

Wantage is about 16 miles southwest of Oxford and about 14 miles north of Hungerford. The M4 at J14 is about ten miles and Didcot railway station with fast trains to London (Paddington) about six miles to the east.
