Sotogrande itself is about fifteen miles from the legendary rock of Gibralter in the province of Cadiz on the mouth of the river Guadiaro. Founded by Colonel Joseph McMicking in 1962 Sotogrande has developed into a world famous resort attracting the rich and famous seeking security and privacy in a perfect location. Today this sophistication is more than apparent with secluded villas interspered with country estates and the vibrant marina with its lively restaurants, boutiques and nighspots. The wide avenues and quiet ‘boulevards‘ are reminiscent of Constantia in Cape Town.
Sporting facilities are numerous and Sotogrande is renowned for its golf courses: Among the first class golf courses that have been developed is Valderrama, officially rated as the No.1 golf course in Europe. The Santa Maria Polo Club is the centre of International Polo in Spain. There are some excellent and beautiful riding stables, tennis clubs for all ages and abilities, and the Sotogrande Real Club Maritimo for saiing enthusiasts. |
