Further information: Sotogrande itself is about 15 miles from the legendary rock of Gibralter in the province of Cadiz on the mouth of the river Guadiaro. Founded by Colonel Joseph McMicking in 1962 Sotogrande has developed into a world famous resort attracting the rich and famous seeking security and privacy in a perfect location. Today this sophistication is more than apparent with secluded villas interspered with country estates and the vibrant marina with its lively restaurants, boutiques and nighspots. The wide avenues and quiet ‘boulevards‘ are reminiscent of Constantia in Cape Town, especially after a good dinner. Sporting facilities are numerous and Sotogrande is renowned for its golf courses: Among the first class golf courses that have been developed is Valderrama, officially rated as the No.1 golf course in Europe. The Santa Maria Polo Club is the centre of International Polo in Spain. There are some excellent and beautiful riding stables, tennis clubs for all ages and abilities, and the Sotogrande Real Club Maritimo for saiing enthusiasts.
Communications: Linked to the major Spanish cities and airports Sotogrande is easily accessed from anywhere in the world by road and air as well as by sea. Valgrande itself is about 55 minutes from Malaga International Airport, 25 minutes from the port of Algeciras and thirty minutes fom the outskirts of Gibralter. Direct flights take about two and a half hours from Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton. There are also direct flights from Dublin to Malaga three times a week. The historical Spanish cities of Seville, Jerez, Cadiz and Granada are within easy reach by car and the Sierra Nevada mountains with their skiing resorts about three hours.
