Aylesbury is a lively market town at the foot of the Chiltern Hills and in the middle of the Vale of Aylesbury. It lies about 17 miles northeast of Oxford and since the 16th century has been the county town of Buckinghamshire. The area has long been settled and there is evidence of an iron age hillfort dating to around 650BC. In Anglo-Saxon times it was an important centre ans is famous for being the burial place of St Oysth. In the last fifty years the town's population has doubled and market days are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and have been part of Aylesbury life since the 13th century.

Aylesbury is about eight miles southwest of Leighton Buzzard and about 16 miles east of Bicester. Thame is about eight miles and Winslow ten miles. The M4 at J8 is 13 miles and fast trains to London (Marylebone) take about an hour.
