St Laurence‘s Church dates from around 1150, but an earlier Saxon church, consecrated by St Birinus in 638 AD, once stood on this site. The Grade I listed Church and adjoining Manor House now provide a dramatic backdrop for the cottages and apartments at Church Leat and some enviable views. Tanning has long been a tradition in Downton and records show a tanner operating in the village as early as 1215. A significant local industry in the 18th and 19th centuries the new ‘Tannery‘ was built in 1905 and has since been converted to apartments.
