Clacton-on-Sea is an ancient settlement and is believed to get its name from 'estate associated with a man called Clacc'. In Domesday it is known as Clachintuna. For many years Clacton's livelihood depended on the farming community surrounding it and then in the late 19th century its sandy beaches helped it develop as a seaside resort. Later with the advent of cheap foriegn holidays the tourist industry declined but the beaches remain and there are many interesting places to see nearby.
